Theories explain why Rick Grimes stayed away from The Walking Dead so long

Andrew Lincoln left The Waling Dead in the middle of season 9, when the injured Rick Grimes flew away from Alexandria in a helicopter with an unknown destination.

This organized its own film trilogy, reaching theaters at some point, if the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) did not change AMC's plans. But the point is this: the program has already jumped about six years in the future. So, what kept Rick from coming home to his friends and family all this time?

This theory suggests that much of this is related to how badly hurt Rick was when we last saw him. In his penultimate appearance, the sheriff was thrown from his horse, falling on a piece of rebar (an iron bar), which passed through his body.

He was on the verge of death when Jadis, or Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) found him. The Reddit user, newmannewlife1 he argues, then, that it would take a long time to heal these wounds, especially in a post-apocalyptic world. Here's how the theory goes:

“What if one of the reasons why Rick has been gone for so long is because he got hurt so badly? After all, he was impaled by a rebar, lost a lot of blood as a result and was then hurled from a bridge to a furious river below. He could be debilitated, maybe he couldn't walk temporarily. I think we will see a lot of that in the first film, in the style of The Dark Knight Rises. ”

This concept certainly makes a lot of sense and would be a sensible way to start the first film in the trilogy. However, other Reddit users are not sure that this would prevent him from meeting Michonne and his children again for so long.

MrEthan997 offers that maybe Rick went into a deep coma, which kept him out of action for years. This is an intriguing idea, since Rick waking up from a coma in the first film would be a beautiful mirror of the pilot episode of the series.

SM211 points out that if Rick was conscious, there was no way he could not do everything he could to return home, arguing that, even if he was arrested by the CRM, he would find a way to escape and, wherever he is in the country, find a map to take to friends.

Another user, AwakenedSam, asks if he will suffer any mental trauma due to his injuries. "Will Rick have amnesia?" Well, unless the drawings found by Michonne (Danai Gurira) were products of Rick's mind that he didn't even recognize, it would be hard to believe that. Anyway, we will have to wait for the first film to confirm something, if the series does not give more clues ahead.
